12 days of action fighting violence against women: violence against Indigenous women

The latest report from the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability (OCFJR) states that one in five victims is an Aboriginal woman or girl. They accounted for 30 victims of the 168 women identified in 2020 ... and yet, they represent only 4% of the general population of Canada.

Across the province, local resources in both communities and large urban centers are insufficient and few domestic and domestic violence shelters are specifically dedicated to them. For example, there is only one home for Aboriginal women in the Montreal region. Lack of access hinders their safety and dignity. Creating and deploying more culturally appropriate resources is critical to meeting the needs of Indigenous women and preventing further feminicides.

Yet Indigenous women, girls, trans and Two-Spirit people find themselves at the intersection of patriarchal and colonial oppression. This systemic violence contributes to fostering inequalities and accentuates the invisibility of their realities. All keeping them in toxic, dangerous and deadly power struggles.
