October 18: A Milestone That Still Resonates
On October 18, 1929, the Persons Case marked a turning point in the history of women’s rights in Canada. The decision of the Judicial Committee of the British Privy Council recognized that women were “persons” under the law, opening the door to their appointment to the Senate.
Led by Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards, this victory remains a symbol of courage and perseverance. It did not, however, put an end to the exclusions or inequalities experienced by all women; rather, it reminds us that progress toward equality is built through collective commitment.
On this Persons Day, let's recognize how far we have come and continue the work toward a more just and inclusive society.
