August 9: Honouring the Keepers of Ancestral Knowledge
On August 9, in recognition of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate the richness of Indigenous cultures, traditions and knowledge.
This year, the United Nations is highlighting Indigenous midwives, the keepers of ancestral knowledge passed down through generations. Their expertise reflects a profound understanding of care, childbirth, and well-being, while helping preserve the languages, traditions, and cultural practices of their communities.
At the Women's Centre of Montréal, we have had the privilege of supporting Indigenous women for more than 20 years, guided by respect, listening and solidarity.
On this day, we express our gratitude and reaffirm our commitment to recognizing and valuing the knowledge, voices and lived realities of First Nations women.
