Emancipation Day: Remember, Acknowledge, and Take Action

On August 1, Canada marks Emancipation Day, commemorating the coming into force, in 1834, of the Slavery Abolition Act throughout the British Empire.

This day invites us to remember an important chapter in our history that affected both Black communities and Indigenous Peoples. It also recognizes the lived experiences of women, who were among those most deeply impacted by the injustices of slavery, as well as its lasting legacy and the ongoing effects of discrimination.

Emancipation Day is a time to acknowledge the struggles of the past, celebrate the resilience of the communities affected, and renew our commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and equitable society.

At the Montreal Women's Centre, we believe that remembering, acknowledging, and taking action are essential to upholding, every day, the values of justice, inclusion, and solidarity that guide our work.
